Soccer's History

History of Soccer

The main point of Soccer or more commonly known around the world as Football, is to put the ball in the opposing teams net. This is known as a goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the match wins the game. However unlike most American sports where there cannot be a tie, in soccer that is allowed. If at the end of 90 minutes, the length of professional soccer matches, if the score is deadlocked the game ends.

The game of Soccer we know to day has origins all througout the world even dating back to ancient times. These games are far from the sport the world loves today, however they are very close in common. Most of these ancient games involved two teams battling each other to score more points than the other. The first instances of the soccer we know today formed around the 1800's in England.

Soccer is now very popular across the world, mostly in Europe and South America. However, the soccer culture is growing within the United States. The culture of soccer in the United States truly began with the formation of the MLS. This League was formed on the back of the United States hosting the World Cup, Soccer's most prestigious competition, which is held every 4 years.

One of my favorite Soccer Stories is one titled the Christmas Truce. This tookplace around Christmas in 1914 during WW1. Both members from the German and Allied side took time to kick a soccer ball around during a ceasefire. A image of this will be on the right. It astonishes me how the love for soccer was shared between two different fighting forces, who were able to lay down their weapons for a kick around.
